Description | Handmade recurved bow made from single length of California yew, carved, steamed and bent to a slight curve and wrapped around mid-section with leather and then overwrapped with waxed linen to form hand grip; Each end of the bow is fitted with a metal tip having a 3/4 lateral groove to secure the drawstring; Short leather lace tied to free end of drawstring is threaded through hole on one of the metal end tips to prevent drawstring from recoiling completely when bow is unstrung; Heavy twisted drawstring cord is formed into loop at each end and plied, with the mid-section of the bowstring also being overwrapped; Bow is labeled "BEAR SLAYER" just above hand grip area and the number "75" to the side, indicating it pulls 75 pounds; On opposite side of the hand grip are printed the year "1917" [year of manufacture], small drawings of a serrated projectile point and the head and shoulders of a bear, and the date "Nov. 22, "18" [probable date this bow was used to shoot the first black bear]; All wooden portions of bow are heavily waxed to a high luster. | |
