Description | Dart consisting of long cylindrical wooden shaft whose distal end is slightly expanded and carved and fitted with a cylindrical ivory socket which is secured to the shaft with two small cylindrical bone or baleen pegs; Elongated and slightly curved dart tip that has been fashioned from an ivory splinter is inserted into the ivory socket and secured with two additional small cylindrical bone or baleen pegs; Dart point is carved along two edges with four pair each of short, downward curving barbs; Shaft also expands slightly near mid-section where it is fitted with three shorter elongated ivory dart points which are fitted into carved sockets in a radial fashion, each one pointing outward and up toward the distal end; Small dart points are carved along inside edge with two notches forming downward curving barbs, and a small rectangular perforation by which they are secured to the shaft with wrapping of native (?) cordage or string, which also extends halfway toward the proximal end and all the way to the distal end where it is wrapped several times around the junction of the shaft and ivory socket. | |
