Description | Small square basket with flat base and vertical sides that rise to a wide, round mouth; Basket is essentially made from a single sheet of birch bark that has been trimmed and folded to shape, with the overlapping joins sewn together with commercial white string; Rim is reinforced with two separate strips of birch bark that are placed along exterior rim on two sides and by a split rods that are placed on interior and exterior of rim, forming a bundle that is coil-wrapped and stitched to sides of basket with willow roots; Two strands of red wool yarn and up to 8 strands of commercial blue and white speckled string are threaded among the rim coil wefts, using a ribbon beading technique for decorative effect. | |
