Description | Single-blade paddle for use with a kayak, with the blade and hand grip carved from a single piece of wood; The very wide and thin blade accounts for approximately half of the total length of the paddle and extends naturally from the hand grip, Lateral edges expand quickly from the hand grip to their maximum width, then show a slight constriction and a second expansion near their midpoints before extending almost parallel to each other toward the distal end, where they again taper to form a V-shaped point; Median ridge runs the entire length of each face of the blade; Hand grip is essentially cylindrical in cross-section and tapers slightly toward proximal end where it and a short crosspiece are pegged together with a mortise and tenon joint; Both faces of blade are painted reddish color on distal end beyond midpoint expansion; Diagonal black line is painted across both faces of proximal end of blade and similarly sized black line encircles proximal end of blade where it joins hand grip; Final 14 cm of hand grip and crosspiece at proximal end are stained a dark reddish but translucent color. | |
