Description | Pair of leg rattles constructed of African wild silk moth (Gonometa postica) cocoons strung together; The cocoons are partially split lengthwise and the grubs are removed; Holes are pierced transversely on the split side in two places near either end and two thin thongs of leather are threaded through the holes; A few fragments of ostrich egg shell are places inside each cocoon, and the whole allowed to dry; In performance each dancer wears a pair wound around his legs and fastened securely; Normally used by men, women may use them when dancing alone. | |
