Materials Willow (Salix sp.) shoots; Devil's claw (Martynia sp.) pods
Description Large round jar-shaped basket with flat base, rounded lower body rising to a very high rounded shoulder, and short but very wide neck with flaring rim; Basket is woven in coiling technique over 3-rod foundation; Warp material is whole peeled willow shoots and primary weft material is peeled split willow shoots; Designs are woven of black devil's claw and consist of circular area in center of base, encircled by 3 concentric bands; 7 wide zigzag lines rise vertically from juncture of base and sides to midlevel on sides where they meet a wide horizontal checkerboard band; 11 triangles are above the checkerboard band, some of which form the low apexes of a wide zigzag band on the shoulder; Second zigzag band encircles the upper shoulder and neck and is bordered above and below by band that alternates light (willow) and dark (devil's claw) fibers; Final rim coil is completely woven in devil's claw.
