Round shallow dinner-sized plate with flat base and very low, flaring sides; Interior and exterior are scraped very smooth and highly burnished; Background of wide design band around interior rim is painted in matte black slip to form a negative pattern of Avanyu, the feathered serpent, whose body encircles the interior rim; Design also includes 3 negative cloud motifs (3 stacked semicircles) along rim; Plate is reduction fired to black-on-black color; Signature "Marie + Julian" is incised in printed upper and lower case letters on base. |
