| Description | Large deep cylindrical basket with slightly concave base and slightly constricted sides; Basket is woven primarily in plain diagonal twining with rows of 3 strand twining on base and around rim for added strength and occasionally around sides for added strength and decorative effect; Warps rods are bent over at rim and incorporated into coil-wrapped bundle; Warp rods are whole unpeeled willow shoots and primary weft fibers are split unpeeled willow shoots; Designs are woven of dyed (black or red) willow shoots and consists of concentric bands of simple geometric patterns encircling the sides. [In 1980, southwestern basket expert Clara Lee Tanner (Arizona State Museum) commented that this basket appeared to be more Apache than Walapai.] | |
