Description | Deep round basket with flat base and vertical sides; Small round area in center of base is woven in plain twining, but the major portion of the base is woven in alternate rows of plain twining and simple plaiting; Sides are woven in plain twining technique, except for single row of 3-strand twining at junction of base and sides and 3 rows of 3-strand twining around the rim; Warp and weft material is spruce roots; Designs are woven of dyed spruce roots and dyed and undyed bear grass leaves; On the base the designs include two bands in which one of the weft fibers in the plain twined rows is dyed black, while the weft in the plaited rows is red in one of the bands; Two wide bands woven in plain plaiting of dyed black spruce roots with dyed red framing lines encircle the midsection of the basket and provide a background color for paired rectilinear meander lines woven in false embroidery using undyed bear grass leaves; The pattern also includes red rectangles also woven of bear grass; Rows of 3-strand twining along rim comprise 1 black fiber and possibly 2 red ones. | |
