Description | Deep rectangular berry gathering basket with flat base and flaring sides, woven in coiled technique over bundle foundations; Warp material is cedar splints and primary weft material is cedar roots; Designs are woven in imbrication technique, using undyed bear grass leaves, mud-dyed black cherry bark, and possibly natural red cherry bark; Design consist of 10 vertical columns of small stacked cross motifs, woven of undyed bear grass and dyed black cherry bark, edged along sides in black cherry bark; Single band of natural red cherry bark (or possible dyed black cherry bark that has faded) is woven in ribbon beading technique just below imbricated designs; 3 cotton string loops are threaded through upper sides of basket (just below rim) and one additional hole indicates there were originally 4 such loops; Short linear segments of wire that are bent to form semi-loops are woven into final rim coil along both sides of basket. | |
