Description | A-C: Three interlocking knives, each formed with blade and handle of a single piece of steel, and handle paneled with additional piece(s); Knife C has two small prongs protruding from handle, which thread through holes in handle of B and fit into shallow notches in handle of A, aligning the three knives together; Outer knives (A and C) have elephant ivory panel on outside edge of handle; Inner knife (B) has brass panels on both sides of handle; D: Slip-on holder to secure knives together; Holder is made of single piece of nickel silver; From BRL 1982: “Three blade take apart table knife. circa 1860-1880. Blade: Forged, steel blades. All three blades marked: 'Joseph Mappin - Cutler to Her Majesty - No. 52 Norfolk St., Sheffield.' (firm established before 1817). Handle: Elephant ivory outer handle scales. Brass inner scales. Nickel silver handle band. Surgical instrument quality; function unknown. Possibly for mincing food to feed to invalid or small child.
