Carved figure in dance position, representing Hümis Katsina (Ripened Corn Katsina, aka Hemis [Jemez] Katsina), who appears in Niman or Home-going Ceremony; Torso and arms are black and he wears carved and painted kilt, dance sash, sash belt, fox skin tail, black leggings, brown moccasins, turtle shell leg rattle, armbands, bow guard, feather wristlet, and yarn bandolier; Case mask includes overhanging basket rim on front and green neck ruff; Face is green on right side and yellow on left side; Tableta is attached to top of mask and painted in many colors and trimmed with feathers and grass stems; Additional feather bundle and stick with corn and tihu, topped with dyed feathers is attached to back of mask; Figure carries carved rattle in right hand and simulated spruce bough in left hand. |
