Description Staff carved as model of totem pole erected at California Academy of Sciences, San Francisco; Depicted from the bottom up are a human head and shoulders, a raven, a smaller human face and hands, a bear, a 3rd human face, an orca (including projecting dorsal fin), and finally an eagle; Lower half of staff is uncarved and is notched to fit into socket on base of carving; The eagle commemorates the bicentennial of the United States, the bear is in honor of the state of California and the human head and shoulders celebrate the inauguration of the Academy’s Wattis Hall of Man (later the Wattis Hall of Human Cultures) which opened July 2, 1976; Bottom of staff is wrapped in copper sheeting.
