Description Large 3-dimensional carving of a half man / half bird figure, carved from single piece of wood in standing position; Figure is very thin when viewed from front, but of more substantial proportions in profile; Figure has body and legs of a bird and stands atop a short, mounded base; The body is plain but is carved to suggest wings and is painted black, with the long tail painted white; Legs are also painted black but further decorated painted with white and brick red bands; A very large human head sits atop a short gray neck and sports a very long beard; Face is predominantly painted white, while ears and forehead are black; “Hair” is painted brick red, topped by a white and black headdress; Long, tapered beard is painted with alternating brick red and black bands; Both eyes are inset with two types of shells.

Description 3-dimensional carving of a human figure, possibly a pregnant woman, shown standing on one leg; Entire figure is stained black; Flattened figure has a large head, whose face is stained a light brown color and facial features (ears and eyes) are very shallowly carved; Eyes are inset with shells, and short native fiber rope is tied through nose; Figure’s body is depicted by a series of parallel crescent shapes that enclose a second human head; Series of shallowly carved crescent shapes outline the figure’s back and continue down its leg and are alternately stained light brown and rust brown; Although carved 3-dimensionally, this figure is intended to be viewed 2-dimensionally.

Description Storyboard carved in high relief from a single piece of wood that is roughly rectangular in shape with rounded corners; Village scene depicted includes large crocodile in water grasping a smaller animal in its mouth, while groups of two and three men sit on the river’s bank interacting with each other; A pair of houses stands in the background, with forest trees throughout and in the background; Four pairs of birds are shown, either on the ground or in the trees, and a small animal identical to the one being grabbed by the crocodile is high in the trees watching the whole scene; Entire board is stained black; Areas that have been carved away are smeared with rust-brown mud and shallowly carved details of animals, people, and plants and other figures are highlighted with white lime pigment. The production of storyboards in Papua New Guinea began sometime in the 1960s, replacing earlier bark boards.

Description Spatula for dispensing lime used while chewing betel nuts; Spatula is carved from single piece of wood and shows a flattened elongated handle whose distal end expands slightly to form a long paddle like spoon; Proximal end of handle flares out even more and is elaborately carved on both front and reverse with series of spirals that incorporate negative spaces and small rounds of abalone shell for decorative effect.

Description 3-dimensional carving from a single piece of wood, depicting a half animal/half human figure in standing position; Figure sports a long tail and a skull-like head with a long beard (?) extending down from its chin to the ground; Small round pieces of abalone shell are inlaid on tip of figure’s tail, on back of his head, and on either side of his chin; Kneeling atop first figure’s head is a smaller bird-like figure with extremely long legs and feet; Extending down from the bird-like figure’s chest is a column that is similar to the first figure’s beard; Small round pieces of abalone shell are inlaid in bird-like figure’s eyes and at top of each leg where they join the figure’s body; Both figures are mounted atop a relatively high oval-shaped base.

Description Two dimensional wall hanging carving in the form of a mask, showing an elongated man’s face whose forehead and cheeks are painted black and decorated with large tan dots; Eyes and nose are both painted gray with black outlines and eyes are also inset with cowrie shells; Figure’s lips are greatly exaggerated and extended; Lower lip is painted gray or off-white and decorated with large black dots; Upper lip is carved as an extension of the cheeks, extending even lower than the lower lip and in the form of long narrow projection that terminates in a snake-like head that is painted red; Figure’s red extended tongue is concealed beneath the upper lip (a distended tongue is a sign of welcoming); Small bit of plant fiber is knotted alongside figure’s eyes, possibly suggesting ears; Additional loop of plant fiber for hanging carving is looped through hole drilled at top of carving.

Description Two-dimensional wall hanging in the form of a mask, carved from a single piece of wood; Mask is oval-shaped and shows an elongated face with a shallowly carved headdress, possibly representing an animal, with different portions stained white, red, and yellow; Figure’s face is stained white and its nose and extended tongue are carved in high relief (a distended tongue is a sign of welcoming); Tongue and mouth are stained red, and a black dot is painted on each cheek and along each side of the chin; Each eye is inset with a cowrie shell, with the area around each eye either stained black, either with stain or resulting from whatever was used to attach the shells; Short length of native cordage is strung through small hole drilled through top of mask.

Description A: Small slit drum in the form of a fish, carved from a single piece of wood; Fish has a somewhat stocky body with very short tail and is depicted with four ventral fins; The entire body, except for the tail and head, is covered by shallowly carved scales and is painted black; The tail and ventral fins are painted white; The eyes are inset with cowrie shells and are outlined in white paint and a wider area of white dots, the latter continuing up to the top of the head; Interior of fish’s body has been hollowed out, leaving a rectangular slit in place of the dorsal ridge; B: Short cylindrical wooden drumstick that is truncated at one end and tapered to a blunt point at the opposite end; Entire drumstick is painted black and decorated with 5 parallel encircling bands that are painted white.

Description Deep oval shaped bowl on pedestal foot and effigy handles, all carved from single piece of wood; Sides of bowl are rounded but rise steeply to a plain rim; Exterior is shallowly carved with geometric band along both upper sides and a third band that extends from each end towards the center, where it is interrupted by the pedestal ring foot which is also shallowly carved on its exterior; Interior of pedestal foot and remaining exterior is stained a rust brown color; Interior of bowl is roughly carved and stained black but is otherwise undecorated; Loop handle carved at each end of the bowl on the rim, extending into the bowl’s interior and beyond the rim on the exterior; Top of handle is in the form of an elongated face mask while the underside is in the form of a similar, but smaller face mask; Handles are stained black.
