Description Tanned leather beaded with lazy stitch technique attached to backing of stiff rawhide; Beaded pattern in red and blue of equilateral triangles with stepped diagonal lines extending down from lower apices; Small bands extend upward from other apices; Background is white; Cowrie shells and short quill wrapped hide slats attached below beaded panel; Quills are dyed red and white and are tipped with tin cones and blue-dyed feathers; Yellow dyed horsehair affixed to rawhide backing with hide laces; Another hide lace attached at top; Collected by American artist Maynard Dixon (1875-1946) prior to 1940.

Description Conical shaped hat with an indeterminate under structure covered on exterior with finely woven mat which is folded under at rim and cut to line interior of hat; Cylindrical knob extends upward on crown and 3 long rectangular flaps hang down from it; Exterior of hat is divided into two bands, each of which is subdivided into panels that are alternately decorated with cowrie shells or geometric patterns in blue and white cut glass beads; Pendant flaps on crown are also decorated in blue and white cut glass beads; Single row of alternating red and white beads encircles crown, neck, and rim of hat; Hats of this style and decorated with beads and shells indicate the high status of the person wearing it.

Description Headband made and worn by both married and unmarried women; Band is made of 8 circular strings of glass beads strung on hairs from giraffe tail; Each string is a single color (red, yellow, or green) except for one (which is half red and half alternating black and white) and in three areas where the strands are twined together with additional giraffe hairs to keep the strands evenly spaced; At the back of the band, the end each strand is fastened to a short length of bone; At the front, 4 flat disc beads are strong on length of wire which is wrapped around band.

Description Headdress consisting of pair of leather cords that are woven together to form single strand; End of single strand is turned back on itself and secured to form a loop at the end; Entire strand is worn around wearer’s forehead, with four short strands of red and yellow beads hanging pendant from the center, below two horizontal strands of small red beads and two commercial mother-of-pearl buttons; Areas that cover wearer’s temples are spiral wrapped with narrow flattened strip of aluminum; Separate plied leather cord is looped through loops at ends of forehead strand and hangs down wearer’s back; Part of this strand is wrapped with aluminum as single strand, then the two strands divide to form separate long pendant strands, both of which also incorporate a wooden stick and are fully wrapped with additional aluminum; One of the strands terminates in a single red and a single yellow plastic bead and a flat aluminum disk, stamped on one face with a cross pattern; Other strand terminates in a flat steel (?) disk that is undecorated; According to original field notes, metal jewelry worn by the Gabra is actually made by Konso metalsmiths; This type of headdress is worn by women.
