Description Small round coiled basket with flat base and sides that rise up to mid-level height and then gradually taper inward to narrow diameter round mouth; Separate lid is conical and fits down over the basket’s upper sides; Both basket and lid are woven in open coiled technique, with widely spaced natural colored, red, and black linen thread wrapped around bundles of natural, black, or red horsehair; Base and lower sides and band around mid-section are woven of natural colored linen threads over natural-colored horsehair bundles; Ends of horse hairs around mid-section are left sticking out from basket, reminiscent of feathers used by some California native basket weavers; Remainder of basket is woven with black linen thread over bundles of black horsehair, except for junction between lower sides and first area of black horsehair, where the weft material is red linen thread; Similarly, lid is woven of partially of black horsehair bundles and partially of white ones, with a narrow band of red horsehair bundles separating the two colors; Weft fibers are the same colors as the warp bundles, except a decorative band of red weft fibers is also used on the black bundles; Large ivory (?) bead is secured to top of lid, along with two longer strands of assorted glass, shell, stone, and snake vertebrae beads, which cascade down the sides of the lid.

Description Round basket with flat base and rounded sides, sloping inward slightly toward rim; Coiled on 3-rod foundation; Designs are in dyed bracken fern roots and consist of 3 parallel and contiguous bands, each one containing solid triangles that are alternately pendant from upper and lower framing lines. [In 1980, basket specialist, Bruce Bernstein (Wheelwright Museum, National Museum of the American Indian) identified this as a Miwok basket, on the basis of its trimmed ends.]

Description Large full-sized cradleboard woven entirely in open spaced plain twining, except several rows on the front corners that are woven in 3-strand twining; Cradle board is scoop-shaped with flat back and steep sides, wide sloping front, and open top, all secured to a heavy oval framing structure comprising bundled hazel shoots that are wrapped in conifer roots; Lower front portion of cradleboard is woven in evenly spaced rows of twining, Sides and back show rows of twining arranged in groups of 3, with a short section of a 4th row extending down from the rim on each side; Infant’s seat on interior bottom is fashioned from two large conifer roots that has been pounded to make them flexible; One of the roots is woven back and forth from front to back in wide passes and the second one is woven in plain twining with the first across entire width of cradleboard, again in very wide passes; Two rawhide laces are attached to the cradleboard’s interior back, each forming a series of loops, through which the long end of one of the laces will pass in a zigzag pattern from side to side to secure the baby in place; String of white, yellow, green, orange and red plastic beads are strung across top of cradleboard on length of plastic wire, with a single cowrie shell at one end and two cowrie shells at the other end.
