Description |
Oval basket with flat base and rounded sides that taper in at rim; Coiled on 3-rod foundation; Designs in dyed bulrush include 4 motifs of stacked terraced diamonds (1 small, 1 large) beginning on base and extending up to rim; Design identified as a snake design by noted Pomo basketweaver, Mabel Mckay; Red woodpecker feathers and black quail topknot feathers decorate upper sides. [In 1977 Pomo basketweaver Mable McKay identified this design as the “snake†design, inspired by a dream. She also attributed this basket to the Mission Lakeport area, and thought it was probably woven by the same person who wove CAS 0370-0819.] |

Round basket with flat base and rounded sides, sloping inward slightly toward rim; Coiled on 3-rod foundation; Designs are in dyed bracken fern roots and consist of 3 parallel and contiguous bands, each one containing solid triangles that are alternately pendant from upper and lower framing lines. [In 1980, basket specialist, Bruce Bernstein (Wheelwright Museum, National Museum of the American Indian) identified this as a Miwok basket, on the basis of its trimmed ends.] |

Description |
Elongated basket in the form of an alligator in walking position, woven entirely in open-spaced coiled technique over a bundle foundation; Warp material is pine needles and primary weft material is undyed raffia grass leaves; Alligator's body is oval-shaped and constitutes the actual "basket" with a flat base and vertical sides; Separate open-ended (at one end only) oval shaped basket is attached to one end of body in inverted position to form the animal's tail; Two separate and very shallow, open-ended (on one end only) are also attached to opposite end of the body, forming the head and hinged jaws of the alligator; Four separate coil-wrapped legs and feet are attached to sides of the body; Separate oval lid with interior lip fits into back cavity of alligator's body; Upper side of neck, body (including lid), and tail are covered with overlapping individual pine cone scales to represent the alligator's skin texture; Eyes and interior of mouth are woven of dyed red raffia grass leaves. |
