Description 2-dimensional wall hanging carved from a single piece of wood, depicting a bird of paradise that is perched atop a drum (?) with its wings spread fully to display its brilliant plumage; Portions of the carving are stained black and others are stained a dark brown; Decorative details of the drum and the bird’s plumage are carved away revealing the natural color of the underlying wood; Reverse side of carving is stained a rust-brown color and then overpainted in black to depict a mask or possibly the head of an animal.

Description 3-dimensional carving from a single piece of wood depicting a human or deity (?) with wings and/ or an elaborate headdress, standing on the back of an eagle-like bird with its wings outstretched, its head turned up toward the person, and grasping a small unidentified object in its beak; Both the person and the bird are positioned atop a triangular base; Details of the the person’s face and dress and of the bird’s feathers, etc. are very shallowly carved, and merely suggested on the reverse side of the carving; Entire carving is stained dark brown.

Description 2-dimensional wall hanging in the form of a mask showing a human face with an extremely elongated head, the latter decorated with shallowly carved geometric designs (crescents and swirling lines) that are painted red or white against a black background; Actual face is also painted black but otherwise undecorated, except for paired red lines along the sides and chin and a red mouth; Eyes are deeply carved and were probably intended to be inset with cowrie or other shells, but there is no evidence that they were, in fact, even inlaid; Small nail hole is located at top of carving for hanging it on the wall.

Description Small round jar with flat base and bulbous lower body whose sides flare outward and then inward as they rise to form a wide, constricted neck with flaring rim; Interior and exterior surfaces are scraped smooth and then the face of a wide-eyed and large-beaked bird is modeled on the exterior; The face is painted gray and embellished with white designs; Circular eyes are gray and white, outlined in red and white; This jar is a smaller version made for tourist trade, copied after larger but similar jars used to store sago palm flour.

Description Small round jar with rounded base and round sides that curve inward toward the rim; Wide semi-flattened stirrup handle is attached to rim and has a short flange projecting outward at each end; Interior and exterior surfaces are scraped smooth and two heart-shaped faces are modeled on the sides of the jar, opposite each other; Both faces are nearly identical, including small round eyes, a projecting pointed nose, and a small mouth; Both faces are painted gray and then overpainted with white designs, except the mouths which are red; The flanges at bases of handle are also painted gray and white.

Description 3-dimensional carving depicting a yam storage house, where yams are stored for later use throughout the year; The house consists of a low platform on which logs are stacked one atop the other to form open-air platforms on which the actual yams are stored, allowing for air flow, all surmounted by a peaked and thatched roof; Because of the importance of yams (staple food, currency, sexual connotations, and more) yam storage houses are often more elaborately decorated than houses in which people live; Carving is decorated with small round pieces of abalone shell around the base, on outer side of each long log, and along the base of the roof.

Description Deep round bowl supported on four cylindrical legs, all carved from a single piece of wood, similar in form to kava bowls from South Pacific islands; Walls of bowl are very thick and form a wide, flat rim; Both interior and exterior of bowl are stained black, and entire rim is carved with small geometric shapes, revealing the natural color of the underlying wood; Design band is broken into four panels, separated by a rectangle that is inlaid with a small triangular piece of white abalone shell.

Description Walking stick or staff carved from a single piece of wood and elaborately decorated with 3- dimensional carvings of a caiman or crocodile whose front and hind legs grasp the top of the walking stick and whose body arches over the top; Caiman’s head is grasping the tail of a snake, while the caiman’s tail extends down the length of the walking stick, where its end is grasped by a long-beaked bird sporting long tail feathers; The bird’s tail, in turn is being grasped by the snake whose own tail is grasped by the caiman; All details of the caiman, bird, and snake are shallowly carved and while the entire walking stick is stained a dark brown, portions of each animal are also stained or painted black, such as a black stripe running down the snake’s back.

Description Cylindrical staff intricately carved from a single piece of wood and bearing a series of human, snake, and floral figures; Starting at the base is a headless snake’s body entwined around the staff; Above it is a crocodile’s head but without a body, followed by three flowers, each supported on separate 3-dimensional stems and with small round pieces of abalone shell set in their centers; Next highest is a standing human with a snake entwined around his or her body, grasping the snake’s head in his or her hands; Human also appears to have snake-like tail, has pieces of abalone shell set into each shoulder and hip, and wears an elaborate headdress that includes a stylized bird head, whose long beak forms the back of the figure’s hair; Above the headdress the 3 flowers are again repeated, followed by a second standing human, similar in form to the first one, but facing in the opposite direction, supporting a flower (instead of a snake) at his or her waist, and wearing a shorter headdress in the form of a mythical creature whose distended tongue trails down the figure’s back; Above the headdress are 3 more flowers.

Description Walking stick carved and assembled from two pieces; The shaft of the walking stick is fashioned from a single tree branch whose bark has been stripped and numerous smaller lateral branches removed, leaving only a small knob from the base of each lateral branch for decorative purposes; Handle has been fashioned from an L-shaped section of another branch, also stripped of its bark; Shaft and handle are probably pegged and/or glued together, and after being assembled, the handle was heavily varnished and the entire shaft was painted black, with the black paint overlapping the juncture with the handle.
