Description Binzasara (編木 or 板ざさら),* also known as a kokiriko (小切り子), a musical percussion instrument composed of multiple wooden slats strung together between two handles with thick white cordage, which is tied in a knot at the end at the base of one of the handles; Wooden slats are only attached at one end, creating a piece that is very flexible and allowing the slats to knock against one another; Stamped above both handles and repeated on reverse side are traditional Japanese hiragana characters reading “kokiriko” and “sasara" (an abbreviated form of the instrument’s name “binzasara”); Traditionally used to accompany folk songs and dances, especially dengaku (田楽), rice planting celebrations. *Non-Roman alphabet characters, such as the Japanese characters included here, are not legible in the online listing, but instead appear as a series of question marks.
