Description | Nearly flat rectangular piki serving tray, woven primarily in plaited technique; Corners of tray are rounded; Primary warp and weft material is split scrub sumac stems; Design in center of basket consists of concentric diamonds, formed by showing exterior of sumac stems in warp direction and the interior surface in weft direction; Warp and weft stems are used in groups of 3 with the plaiting done primarily in an over 2/under 2 (total of 6 stems) technique; Perimeter of tray is woven in wicker technique, using whole sumac stems as the weft; At the rim, 2 warp or weft groups are combined and all but one stem in each group are clipped, while the unclipped one is bent over and incorporated into a rim bundle that is coil-wrapped with a split yucca leaf. | |
