Description | Very large basket with square base and flaring sides that rise to a very wide and nearly round mouth; Basket is essentially made from a single large sheet of birch bark that has been trimmed and folded to shape, with the overlapping joins at the ends lashed together with willow roots; Natural white color of exterior of bask faces outward; Exterior of rim is reinforced with 6 separate and overlapping birch bark strips and a single but heavy willow rod which are secured to the rim with a coil-wrapping of willow roots; Four small holes cut into base of basket (1 near each corner) indicate use as a strainer or sieve. | |
