Description | Deep ovoid basket with flattened base and flaring sides, essentially made from a single sheet of birch bark that has been trimmed and folded to shape and the overlapping joins secured with lashings of willow roots; Natural white exterior surface of the bark is turned outward; 3 separate bark strips overlap each other around exterior of rim to provide additional support and are secured with a single willow (?) shoot which is coil-wrapped with willow roots; Small square hole is cut into center of base, most likely to allow for straining of foods or liquids; Thin wire loops threaded through two corners at the rim (holes indicate similar loops were also in the other two corners) may have support a handle originally or provided a means for suspending strainer. | |
