Description Very large jar-shaped, bottleneck basket with flat base, very high flaring sides, high and wide shoulder, and very wide tall neck with slightly flared rim; Basket is woven in coiling technique over 3-rod bundle foundation; Warp material is willow or sumac shoots and primary weft material is peeled and split willow shoots; Designs are woven of black devil's claw and brown yucca root, and include solid black circular area on base, followed by 3 bands each (in sequence) of alternating human and dog figures, black and white checkerboard bands with contiguous triangles above and below, and wide zigzag bands, with the first band beginning on the base and the last band ending at the rim; Final rim coil is woven of black devil's claw. [A similar basket (but lacking figures) is illustrated in Bert Robinson’s The Basketweavers of Arizona (1954 Univ. of New Mexico Press) and listed as the work of “Boni” from San Carlos. Other similar baskets are in the collections of the Texas Memorial Museum, the Peabody Museum, and the National Museum of the American Indian.]
