Description | Rectangular basket with flat base, slightly bulging vertical sides, and low lip inside rim that was originally fitted with lid (now missing); Base of basket is woven in plain plaiting technique over alternately wide and narrow cedar splints, using cedar roots as the weft; Sides of basket are woven in coiled technique over a bundle foundation of cedar splints (each bundle consists of a wide cedar splint on the exterior and several smaller ones on the interior); Weft material throughout basket is cedar roots; Designs are woven in imbrication technique, using undyed reed stems or bear grass leaves and both natural red and mud-dyed black cherry bark; Designs consist of an upper and lower band of rectilinear "S" motifs (11 in lower band and 12 in upper band) that are woven in alternate colors of red and black on background of undyed reed stems or bear grass leaves; Traces of at least two cotton string carrying loops remain along rim, positioned between interior lip and exterior wall. | |
