| Description | Baby carrier model in the form of a rectangular basket with flat base, and low sides which are slightly higher and vertical at one end and lower and slightly flaring at the opposite end; Carrier is woven in coiled technique over a bundle foundation; Warp material is cedar splints and primary weft material is cedar roots; Designs are woven in imbrication and ribbon beading techniques, using undyed reed stems or bear grass leaves and both natural red and mud-dyed black cherry bark; Designs on exterior sides of carrier are asymmetrical and include 3 ribbon-beaded parallel bands around upper side (2 of undyed bear grass or reeds and 1 of mud-dyed black cherry bark), of which only 1 extends completely around all 4 sides; Below the ribbon beaded bands are 7 vertical bars (3 on each side and 1 along upper end) that are woven in imbrication technique and alternating between red cherry bark with undyed bear grass or reeds and black cherry bark with bear grass or reeds; 2 narrow vertical bars woven entirely of black cherry bark are located on the lower end; Series of rawhide loops along each side on interior base and 4 larger rawhide loops spanning the top opening of the carrier would have held the baby in place. | |
