Description | Round basket with flat base, vertical sides, high shoulder, and recessed rim, along with corresponding round, flat-topped lid with low sides that fit over the basket's rim; Base of basket is primarily woven in over 2/under 2 diagonal plaiting technique, using cedar bark slats as both the warp and weft; Perimeter of base is woven in plain twining technique, using rye grass stems as the weft; Sides of basket and entire lid are woven in wrapped twining technique, using bear grass leaves as the weft, and with several whole bear grass leaves threaded in and out of the warps around the midsection; Single cedar bark slat encircles top of basket, forming a recessed rim, over which the warps are bent and bound into the final row of twining; Designs are woven of dyed bear grass leaves and include composite purple and yellow band around lower sides of basket and band of 3 swimming black ducks and one black dugout canoe (with 3 men inside) around mid-section; Designs on lid include large yellow round motif in center, encircled by black band on top of lid and composite purple and yellow band along rim. | |
