Description Group of three hand-modeled ceramic rattles, each in the form of a Yamabushi tengu, or mountain monk tengu; Tengu are mountain forest goblins with both Buddhist and Shinto attributes; They are skilled warriors and patrons of the martial arts, and come in two forms, the first a crow-like creature with long beak and wings, the other a more human-like form but with a long nose and wearing a monk’s cap; Tengu can transform themselves into men, women, or children, can disappear from one place and immediately reappear in another distant location, and have other supernatural powers; The three rattles in this group are nearly identical, each having a round head, prominent ears and long nose, down-turned mouth, and gold-painted eye sockets, and wearing a gold-painted monk’s cap; A garland of leaves is embossed on the reverse side of each one, and each rattle contains a small clay ball inside; “A” is painted white and fitted with a white string; “B” is painted dark blue and fitted with a green string; and “C” is painted red and fitted with an orange string.
