Description Set of three unpainted clay rattles; A is pear-shaped and possibly depicts a fruit or a seed; B is in the form of a Yamabushi tengu, or mountain monk tengu; Tengu are mountain forest goblins with both Buddhist and Shinto attributes; They are skilled warriors and patrons of the martial arts, and come in two forms, the first a crow-like creature with long beak and wings, the other a more human-like form but with a long nose and wearing a monk’s cap; Tengu can transform themselves into men, women, or children, can disappear from one place and immediately reappear in another distant location, and have other supernatural powers; C is in the form of Otafuku, commonly known as the "goddess of mirth", who also goes by the name of Okame; She is depicted here with very full round and dimpled cheeks; Each rattle has an elongated sliver of clay removed from its base and contains a small clay marble for making a rattling sound; A possible artist’s hallmark is stamped on the side of each rattle; A commercially braided cord (blue on A and B; orange on C) is slipped through a pair of holes at the top of each rattle.
