Description | Press-molded bells in shape of a bird-like head, each depicting a karau tengu, a mountain goblin with both Shinto and Buddhist attributes that include supernatural powers to transform into human or animal form, to speak without moving one’s mouth, and to move instantly from place to place; The karasu tengu form is depicted with the head of a crow-like bird and a human body; The larger example here is mostly green, with red beak, golden eyebrows, and a monk’s black hat; Red ribbon threaded through two holes at top; Smaller example is an orange color overall, with silver eyebrows and also a monk’s black hat; Yellow ribbon is threaded through two holes at top; Both bells have incised inscriptions on back. | |
