Description Shadow puppet in the form of a cardboard cutout of a white fox shown, representing the messenger of Inari, the rice god, standing upright and dressed in a kabuki costume of a brown robe, as worn by Ishikawa Danjuro, who died in 1903 but who, during his lifetime, frequently visited the Oji Shrine to pray for the success of his theatrical career; A role in “Shibaraku” was among one of his most famous and the play is among “18 Famous Plays” reserved only for the Danjuro family; In this toy, the fox is shown holding holding a bamboo stick which moves up and down when one of the bamboo sticks on which he is mounted is moved up and down, recreating a motion from the play; On the fox’s kimono is printed an image of concentric squares, representing “3 rice measures,” another reference to Inari.
