Description | Papier mâché figurine of head of a princess, dressed in a red garment reminiscent of the dhoti worn by Indian priests, decorated with the pine-bamboo-plum motifs; Reverse side of figurine is painted with a black pear-shaped motif, possibly representing a very stylized line drawing of a seated woman as seen from the back (?); Designed to always stand upright; Traditionally, this doll is thrown into the houses of friends in the early morning of New Year’s Day, to symbolize unexpected luck; The doll’s ability to immediately stand upright implies that the recipient might immediately recover from any unexpected mishaps during the coming year. | |
