Description | Animated toy consisting of a papier mâché monkey wearing a blue and gold hat of a Sambaso dancer (whose dances appease the gods and bring good luck) and carrying a paper drum and a Shinto gohei (cut-paper offering to the gods) on its back; Monkey is suspended on a tall bamboo pole that is topped with white feathers, the pole, in turn, mounted in a cross-section piece cut from the branch of a cherry tree, and in turn, glued to a rectangular wood base that is painted black; Apparently missing is a large paper banner painted with an iris (the flower emblem for Boys’ Day) that would be attached to the monkey and act like a sail in the wind, causing the monkey to either climb or descend the pole; Parents would traditionally give this type of toy to a newborn boy to protect him against illness and also to symbolize their wish that he climb to a high position in life. | |
