Description | Very large, deep round gathering basket with flat base and vertical sides; Base and sides of basket are woven in alternate rows of plain twining and simple plaiting, except single row of 3-strand twining along juncture of base and sides, and the final 2.5 cm around rim, which are woven entirely in plain twining; At juncture of base and sides, each warp is split into two smaller warps, resulting in a much finer weave on the sides than on the base; Warp rods are bent over at rim and bound in a false braid; Warp and weft material is spruce roots; Basket is undecorated except for the plain twined band just below the rim, which consists of alternating red and green bands that are woven of dyed spruce roots; Two carrying straps or loops for attaching tumpline are made from short lengths of commercial green canvas-like cloth and are sewn with thread to interior of rim opposite each other; Traces of arrow-like designs woven of green wool (?) remain on the loop handles. | |
