Description | Papier mâché figurine of a young girl in standing position, dressed in a long-sleeved red kimono; Figurine depicts a legendary young girl named Omaki who was a maid servant to a princess; Servants were usually called “Hoko†and when the princess became ill, this girl cared for her and helped her to recover, only to become sick herself; To prevent others from catching her illness, she banished herself to a remote island where she died; Since then, people have made images of her to commemorate her loyalty and also to give to their children, who after holding the doll, toss it into the sea with the hope that all childhood illnesses will go with it; Artist’s signature is printed in Japanese script on back of figurine. | |
