Pair of dolls dressed in obis and kimonos and fashioned entirely from folded sheets of chiyogami (patterned) and irogami (solid colored) paper; The first doll wears a long gold and white print kimono (with red interior) and a white and purple print obi which is folded at her back; The second doll wears a red and white striped kimono (with red interior) and a red, pink, and lavender striped obi which is suspended down her back; Dolls of this type are especially popular around the time of Hina Matsuri, observed on March 3 and sometimes referred to as Girls Day, although its history and traditions are much more complex. |
