Description Small round coiled basket with flat base and sides that rise up to mid-level height and then gradually taper inward to narrow diameter round mouth; Separate lid is conical and fits down over the basket’s upper sides; Both basket and lid are woven in open coiled technique, with widely spaced natural colored, red, and black linen thread wrapped around bundles of natural, black, or red horsehair; Base and lower sides and band around mid-section are woven of natural colored linen threads over natural-colored horsehair bundles; Ends of horse hairs around mid-section are left sticking out from basket, reminiscent of feathers used by some California native basket weavers; Remainder of basket is woven with black linen thread over bundles of black horsehair, except for junction between lower sides and first area of black horsehair, where the weft material is red linen thread; Similarly, lid is woven of partially of black horsehair bundles and partially of white ones, with a narrow band of red horsehair bundles separating the two colors; Weft fibers are the same colors as the warp bundles, except a decorative band of red weft fibers is also used on the black bundles; Large ivory (?) bead is secured to top of lid, along with two longer strands of assorted glass, shell, stone, and snake vertebrae beads, which cascade down the sides of the lid.
