Description Large finely woven rectangular mat made from strips of pandanus fiber (each approx. 3 to 4 cm wide); Approx. 18 to 20 cm on one end of each strip is left intact, while the remaining length is carefully cut into 12 or more narrow parallel fibers; The strips are then laid out overlapping each other diagonally with the uncut ends left as fringe and the narrow fibers woven in an over 1 / under 1 pattern so that the warp and weft fibers appear the same; When the fibers reach the desired width, they are turned back on themselves to form a selvage and weaving continues in the opposite direction; Along bottom edge, the fibers are manipulated and weaving continues to form a series of short tabs measuring approx. 10 cm wide and 7 to 9 cm long; Below the tabs, all remaining warp and weft fibers form long fringes; Mat is completely undecorated except for narrow band of commercially woven red cotton cloth that is machine-sewn across width of mat in zigzag line just above woven tabs and overlaid with dyed red chicken feathers that are laid end to end atop ribbon, with the two layers sewn to the mat with red thread; Upper peaks of zigzag line are accented with dyed yellow chicken feathers and lower peaks of zigzag line are accented with dyed green chicken feathers.
