Materials Deer grass (Muhlenbergia rigens) stems; Cotton twill tape
Description Bundle of unprocessed deer grass stems, wrapped with length of white cotton twill tape; For use as a foundation in coiled baskets, each stem would be stripped of its leaves and seeds by holding the distal end in one’s fingers and then pulling the entire stem through a pair of roughened corncobs, or in modern times, using a scouring pad, working from top to bottom of the stem; For use, several stems would be gathered into a small bundle.
