Description Small round bowl with flat base, rounded sides, and incurving rim; Entire exterior (except base) and interior of rim are highly burnished; Background area of band that encircles mid-section of bowl has been carved away, leaving a motif of a highly stylized feathered serpent or Avanyu, shown head to tail; Bowl has been reduction fired, giving it a black-on-black color; Artist’s signature “Stella Chavarria Santa Clara” is lightly incised in script on base. Stella Naranjo Chavarria is the daughter of Teresita Naranjo, the granddaughter of Christina Naranjo, and the niece of ary Cain and Mida Tafoya, all of whose works are also included in the CAS collection. Stella’s husband, Loretto Chavarria, is a brother to Elizabeth Chavarria Naranjo, also represented in the Academy’s collection.
