Description Round bowl with flat base, rounded sides and incurving rim; Entire exterior (except base) and interior rim are highly burnished; Interior is only slightly less burnished; Background area on decorative band that encircles upper sides of bowl is carved away, leaving a motif of a feathered serpent or Avanyu, shown with its head and tail overlapping and with a large lightning arrow extending from its mouth; Bowl has been reduction fired to yield a black-on-black color; Artist’s Signature “Elizabeth Naranjo Santa Clara Pueblo” is incised in script on base. Elizabeth Chavarria Naranjo is a sister-in-law to Stella Naranjo Chavarria, whose work is also represented in the Academy’s collection.
