Description Medium sized round wedding vase, with flat base, spherical body, and two very large and widely flaring spouts that are joined by an arching handle; Sides of vase are deeply carved with a large Avanyu (feathered serpent) image, shown head to tail and with a lightning bolt extending from its mouth; All exterior surfaces are highly burnished, and vase has been fired in a reduction firing to yield an even black color; “Mida Tafoya Santa Clara Pueblo” is lightly incised in script on base. Mida Tafoya is the daughter of Christina Naranjo, the sister of Mary Cain and Teresita Naranjo, niece of Margaret Tafoya, and the aunt of Stella Naranjo Chavarria, all of whose works are represented in the CAS pottery collection.
