Description |
Lime container made from hollowed gourd whose exterior has been heavily smoked to turn it black and then sanded or scraped to completely remove the soot around the top and bottom; The remaining black band around the mid-section of the gourd is then selectively scratched to produce an elaborate geometric design, whose negative areas are the underlying color of the natural gourd and the positive areas are the actual design; Neck of gourd has been removed and replaced with stopper made from tightly coiled banana leaves wrapped with other plant fiber and interwoven with a narrow strip of yellow plastic to form a checkerboard diamond shape, and finally fitted with a boar’s tusk on top; Lime is used when chewing betel nuts. |
