Description Woman’s round basketry hat with rounded top and sides, woven primarily in plain twining except for several rows of 3-strand twining at the basket’s start and a single row of 3-strand twining above and below the primary design band around the hat’s sides; Except for the rows of 3-strand twining, the design on the exterior of the hat is woven in half twist overlay; Design field is divided into three registers, the first of which covers the hat’s crown and shows a 4-arm cross motif in brown woodwardia fern edged in black maidenhair fern, all on straw-colored bear grass; Second register encircles the sides of the hat and shows the primary zigzag design that includes stacked triangles, parallelograms, and trapezoids, woven primarily in brown woodwardia fern with smaller areas of black maidenhair fern; Third and final design registers encircles final cm of weaving and shows 3 units of stacked parallelograms, also woven in woodwardia fern with maidenhair fern highlights; Warp rods are trimmed off flush with rim.
