Description | Round basket with flat base and vertical sides, along with round lid with low sides and wide, flat-topped knob handle that contains seeds or pebbles to produce rattle sound; Base of basket, final 1.5 cm on upper sides of basket, and interior center of lid are woven in alternating rows of plain twining and simple plaiting; Remainder of sides of basket and lid are woven in plain twining technique, except for single row of 3-strand twining along the rim on both the basket and lid; Warp and weft material of both the basket and lid is spruce roots; Wide design band around mid-section of basket is woven in plain twining using dyed purple spruce roots as the weft; Overlaying the purple weft background are six outlined terraced "S" motifs, woven of bear grass leaves in a false embroidery technique and alternating between undyed straw color and dyed red; Designs on lid are all woven of dyed bear grass leaves in a false embroidery technique, and include floral motif on top of knobbed lid with 4 dark gray petals, encircled by red and dark gray bands; Design on top of lid include 2 parallel rectilinear dark gray bands and 6 red rectangles. | |
