Description | Small round basket with flat base, vertical sides, and high shoulder with recessed rim, and corresponding round lid with slightly domed top and short knob handle; Warp material throughout is cedar bark splints; Central area of base is woven in simple plaiting technique, using cedar bark splints as both warp and weft; Outer portion of base is woven in wrapped twining technique, using bear grass leaves as the weft; Sides of basket and entire lid are woven in wrapped twining technique, using bear grass leaves as the weft; Single wide cedar bark splint encircles basket above shoulder, forming the recessed rim, over which the warps are bent and bound into the final row of twining; Designs on base of basket include several concentric bands in colors of brown and orange, and red; Designs on sides of basket include parallel bands along lower sides in colors of green, yellow and purple and scene showing three hunters in dugout canoe pursuing a whale that has already been harpooned, all in purple and green; 3 small ducks in same colors complete the scene; Designs on lid include purple knob handle, surrounded by whirling motif in colors of green, purple, and yellow; Wide band in colors of green, yellow, and purple encircles sides of lid. | |
