Description | Round basket with flat base and vertical sides; Warp material throughout basket is cedar bark; Basket start on base consists of plaited cedar bark slats, but most of the base is woven in plain twining technique, using cedar bark as the weft; sides of basket are woven in wrapped twining technique, using bear grass leaves as weft, except for final 7 or 8 rows that are done in plain twining, again using cedar bark as the weft; Warps are bent over at rim and bound into final row of twining; Designs on sides of basket are woven of dyed bear grass leaves and consist of series of parallel red and yellow bands that encircle lower sides, negative zigzag band on red background and framed above and below by purple bands that encircles mid-section of basket, and upper framing line in red and yellow along top edge of wrapped twining section; Basket possibly had lid originally with sides that would have fit over plain twined area around rim of basket; Plain twining around rim instead of wide cedar slat indicates early date for this basket. | |
