Description | Deep cylindrical basket with flat base and vertical sides, woven entirely in closed plain twining; Warp and weft material is rye grass stems; Designs are woven of worsted wool yarn in false embroidery technique and consist of 7 parallel bands of spaced rectangles (each with white center bar flanked above and below by red, green, blue, or gray bars) that encircle sides of basket; Matching round lid is woven in similar technique with 5 rows of crossed and exposed warps on sides; Designs on lid are similar to those on lower portion but number only 4 bands in colors of red, coral, light blue, green, and dark brown; Lid fits down over significant portion of lower basket; Basket may have been made as cylindrical cigarette case. | |
