Description | Round handheld shield made from single piece of very thick hide that has been shaped while wet; Center of shield is pushed out into dome shape and outer edges are turned up to form a low brim; Separate piece of hide is formed into U-shaped handle, wrapped in cotton fabric, and secured to back of shield with leather laces that are looped through small holes to front of shield; Front of shield is decorated with all over pattern of concentric rings of small pinhole impressions; Reverse of shield is decorated with shallowly incised concentric bands that are painted red and black and frame painted bands of red and black cross-hatched designs. | |
