Description | Shallow rectangular carrying basket with flat base, flaring sides and vertical ends; Basket is essentially made from single sheet of birch bark that has been trimmed and folded to shape; Natural white exterior of bark faces inward; Rim is reinforced on exterior by single whole willow (?) rod that is lashed in place by a bark (?) strip sewn in a running stitch; Separate wide strips of birch bark are folded in half and placed at either end of the basket, with the fold placed well above the rim, and then secured with additional lashes; Short section of wooden stick is passed beneath the fold of each of these end strips, and a longer wooden stick (whose side branches have been removed) is perpendicular to the end rods and extends across the entire basket as a carrying handle. | |
