Materials Rye grass (Elymus sp.) stems; Cotton string; Worsted wool yarn; Seal gut
Description Deep round basket with flat base and vertical sides; Basket is woven primarily in open spaced plain twining, using rye grass stems as the primary warp and weft material; Single row of twining at junction of base and sides is woven in 3-strand twining; Secondary weft material is cotton string which is used only at the start of the basket; Warps are paired on the base of the basket and the warps in each pair are diverted alternately to the left or right in each succeeding row of twining; On the sides of the basket the warps are parallel; 5 widely spaced parallel design bands around upper 2/3 of basket are woven in closed plain twining, with worst wool yarn and seal gut applied in overlay technique; Top, middle, and lower band is comprised of long pink segments outlined in blue, alternating with shorter white and green rectangles; Other two bands are comprised of long red segments alternating with short white and lavender rectangles; Warps are gathered at rim and incorporated into heavy braided band.
